#16 Mindful Moons
MINDFUL MOONS
As September’s Harvest Moon continues its journey into October’s Hunter’s moon, we are still celebrating the harvest at the farm from the apple trees & veggie garden.
The alignment of the orchard with the path of the moon has always made Big River Farm a special place for me. The original Mendocino Moon was designed looking out of the Butsu windows to the west, as the moon set through the trees.

Looking east over the orchard, the moon rises between the Welcome Redwood & the Granny Smith apple tree, with its ripening fruit.
Harvest Moon Over the Orchard
I celebrated that moment with a couple of collagraphs, where I put the actual redwood branch snippets & a cutout of the apple tree on the plate, over a veil and a circle mask for the moon. Fun!

This is a snippet of anise from the garden play acting as a branch, over the veil & the circle mask for the moon.
Moonrise at Big River Beach
Big River Farm is on the Big River Watershed. When we go to Big River Beach at the end of the road, we can watch the moonrise up the valley. I have always wanted to capture that moment.

Gibbous Harvest Moon
This year, I made a hand colored trace monoprint as part of the Harvest Moon exhibit at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino.
The influence of the Zen vibe in the Butsu is strong. As I was playing with watercolors to finish the hand coloring of the monoprints, I was inspired to get out my sumi ink & brushes & washi paper.

Gibbous Harvest Moon was the final moon in the series, with Sumi ink on Washi paper & a watercolor wash in my favorite blue.
Art Responding to Art
October’s exhibit at the Artists’ Co-op is our annual Ekphrasis show.
The Writers of the Mendocino Coast and the members of the Artists’ Coop of Mendocino collaborate for the 15th year to produce an ekphrastic experience. Ekphrasis is a Greek word that, loosely translated, means art describing art. Think “Ode on a Grecian Urn.”
I revisited my Fire Horse Series and incorporated the gilding process to submit On to Victory!. The submittal was anonymous & the writer had no idea what the artists had entitled their pieces. Ten gallery artists have created art in their medium for ten writers to respond to. Ten writers have initiated one page of writing for ten artists to respond to. These pairs are anonymous until they are revealed at the Artists’ Coop gallery Second Saturday reception on October 10.

Rest in the Pollinator Party Place
Now to rest in the Pollinator Party Place as the warm autumn spell keeps the Magic going for a little while more before the rains….
